Russell Meigs:
Trees and Timber in the Ancient Mediterranean World
Oxford University Press,
1982:
553pp plus maps and plates
English
is an excellent in-depth survey of its topic. Mostly Roman, although a general background proved necessary, and sometimes the author's interests lead him wonderfully astray. The discussion of sources includes a long section (pp19‑29) on Pliny the Elder and the six Books of his Naturalis Historia that deal with trees.
NB: This and several dozen other similar OUP titles are now available in special reprints from Powell's Bookstores (USA) or from Sandpiper Books Ltd. (UK).
For a bit more of a bibliography, see John M. McMahon's page on trees.
