Served: at the Cavalry School for Practice, Carlisle, Pa., 1849‑50; and on frontier duty at Ft. Laramie, Dak., 1850.

Resigned, Nov. 30, 1850.

Civil History. — Counselor at Law, Martinsville, Ind., 1851‑56. District Attorney, for Brown, Monroe, and Morgan Counties, Ind., 1852‑54. Colonel, Indiana Militia, 1854‑58. Secretary of State of the State of Indiana, 1856‑58.

Military History. — Served in paying troops in the Department of Texas, 1858‑61.

Major, Staff — Paymaster, Oct. 23, 1858.

Served during the Rebellion of the Seceding States, 1861‑66: as Chief Paymaster for the States of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin, June, 1862, to Sep. 19, 1864; on leave of absence, Oct. 22, 1864, to Feb. 14, 1865; and as Chief Paymaster, at New Orleans, La., Feb. 14 to May 17, 1865.

Retired from Active Service, Dec. 30, 1888, he being 64 Years of Age.
