a As with other Confederate officers, Cullum's Register omits his war record. His tombstone (q.v.) gives a good summary:

Civil War Brigadier General: Confederate States of America C. S. A.
Department of the Peninsula with the 8th Alabama Infantry Regiment
Army of the Mississippi with the 28th Alabama Infantry Regiment
Army of Tennessee with the 28th Alabama Infantry Regiment
Army of Tennessee Brigade Commander under General Simon B. Buckner
Army of Tennessee Commander of all troops in Eastern Tennessee at Cumberland Gap
Captured at Cumberland Gap Tennessee and sent to Fort Warren and Johnson's Island until end of war
The Southern Historical Society Papers supply a few additional details: Brigadier-General, May 3, 1863; commanding Fifth Brigade, Army of East Tennessee; taken prisoner September 9, 1863 at Cumberland Gap, where he surrendered to Burnside.
Images with borders lead to more information.
The thicker the border, the more information. (Details here.) |
