Thayer's Notes:

a Col. Cole's full name (such was his rank in the Confederate army, see next note) is from Heitman's Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army; his birthdate is from his tombstone (q.v.).

[decorative delimiter]

b As with other Confederate officers, Cullum's Register omits his war record: according to the Southern Historical Society Papers, in 1862 he was ranked Lieut.‑Colonel and served as Chief Commissary of Subsistence of the Army of Northern Virginia.
