Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1849, to July 1, 1853, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Bvt. Second Lieut. of Infantry, July 1, 1853. Served in garrison at Newport Barracks, Ky., 1853‑54; on frontier duty on Santa Fé Route, being engaged in pursuit of Kiowa and Comanche Indians, from whom he captured 400 horses and mules, — Santa Fé, N. M., 1854‑55, — Adjutant of Colonel Vrain's New Mexican Volunteers, Feb. 18 to Aug. 14, 1855, being engaged in several (Second Lieut., 8th Infantry, Mar. 3, 1855) Skirmishes, — Aide-de‑Camp to Bvt. Brig.‑General Garland, Oct. 1, 1855, to Sep. 15, 1858, — at Santa Fé, N. M., 1858, — and at Ft. Marcy, N. M., 1858‑59; in garrison at Ft. Columbus, N. Y., 1859‑60; and on (First Lieut., 8th Infantry, Oct. 19, 1858, to May 14, 1861) Coast Survey, Mar. 9, 1860, to May 6, 1861. Served during the Rebellion of the Seceding States, 1861‑64; as Asst. Quartermaster in Western Virginia, May 6, 1861, to Aug. 2, 1862; as (Captain, Staff — Asst. Quartermaster, May 17, 1861) Asst. Depot Quartermaster at Ft. Union, N. M., Sep. 21, 1862, to Feb., 1863, — at Ft. Craig, N. M., Mar., 1863, — and at Ft. Union, N. M., Apr., 1863, to Apr., 1864. Resigned, Apr. 5, 1864. Civil History. — Farmer, Huerfano River, near Ft. Garland, Col., 1864‑66. Mining, Taos County, Col., to 1886. Died, May 27, 1886, at Santa Fé, N. M.: Aged 56.a |
a A page at Find-a‑Grave (q.v.) reports the bare fact that a William Craig, who died May 27, 1886, is buried in Santa Fe National Cemetery, but calls him "Pvt US Army".
