James Hoffman Hill: Born Oct. 26, 1834, Wilmington, NC.

Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1851,  p628 to July 1, 1855, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to

Bvt. Second Lieut. of Infantry, July 1, 1855.

Served: in garrison at Ft. Carlisle, Pa., 1855; on frontier duty

(Second Lieut., 10th Infantry, Aug. 8, 1855.)

at Ft. Snelling, Min., 1855‑56, — Ft. Ridgely, Min., 1856‑57, — Utah Expedition, 1857‑58, 1859‑60, being engaged as Adjutant of Battalion of Utah Volunteers, Dec. 10, 1857, to Oct. 6, 1858, — Adjutant, 10th Infantry, July 16, 1860, to May 1, 1861, — and at Ft. Laramie, Dak., 1860‑61.

First Lieut., 10th Infantry, Feb. 27, 1861.

Resigned, May 1, 1861.

Joined in the Rebellion of 1861‑66 against the United States.​a

Civil History. — Unknown, nothing authentic having been received.

Died, June 6, 1890, at Wilmington, N. C.: Aged 56.

Buried, Oakdale Cemetery, Wilmington, NC.
