John Sappington Marmaduke: Born Mar. 14, 1833, Arrow Rock, MO.

Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1853, to July 1, 1857, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to

Bvt. Second Lieut. of Infantry, July 1, 1857.

Served: on frontier duty at Ft. Laramie, Dak., 1857‑58, — Utah Expedition,

(Second Lieut., 7th Infantry, Aug. 1, 1857)

1858‑60, — March to New Mexico, 1860, and Ft. Webster, N. M., 1860‑61; and on leave of absence, 1861.

Resigned, Apr. 17, 1861.

Joined in the Rebellion of 1861‑66 against the United States.​a

Civil History. — Commission Merchant, St. Louis, Mo., 1866‑69. Superintendent of Southern Agencies of the Life Association of America, 1869‑71. Editor of various Missouri newspapers, 1871‑74. Secretary of Missouri State Board of Agriculture, 1874. Railroad Commissioner of the State of Missouri, 1875‑80. Governor of the State of Missouri, 1885‑87.

Died, Dec. 28, 1887, at Jefferson City, Mo.: Aged 55.

Buried, Woodland Cemetery, Jefferson City, MO.
