Y., Oct. 1, 1868, to Aug. 28, 1869; at the Military Academy, as Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Aug. 28, 1869, to Aug. 28, 1872 (leave of absence in (First Lieut., Corps of Engineers, Jan. 6, 1870) Europe, June 1 to Sep. 1, 1872); with Engineer Battalion at Willet's Point, N. Y., Sep. 12, 1872, to Jan. 26, 1874, being Battalion Quartermaster, Dec., 1872, to Jan. 26, 1874; as Assistant Engineer on the Public Works in Boston Harbor, Mas., Jan. 26, 1874, to May 5, 1875; at the Military Academy, as Assistant Instructor of Practical Military Engineering, May 17, 1875, to Mar. 7, 1877; as Assistant Engineer, under the orders of Lieut.‑Colonel Stewart, and of the Pacific Board of Engineers at San Francisco, Cal., Mar. 19, 1877, to Mar. 19, 1883 (temporarily on Survey of Columbia River Bar, Aug. 11 to Nov. 19, 1878); as Assistant Engineer on Improvement of Coos Bay, Jan. 15 to July 13, 1880; as Engineer p107 of Twelfth Light-house District, Mar. 8, 1882, to Nov. 30, 1887; (Captain, Corps of Engineers, June 15, 1882) and in charge of various River and Harbor Improvements and Surveys in Northern California, Aug. 10, 1884, to Nov. 23, 1887, — and of Improvement of Colorado River, Sep. 22, 1884, to Sep., 1886. Civil History. — President of Northwestern Pacific Railroad Company to January, 1914, and since Vice-President and member of Executive Committee; President of Spring Valley Water Company, May 10, 1906, to July 31, 1908; and since Vice-President and member of Executive Committee; Director of Union Trust Company of San Francisco, of Nevada National Bank, of United Railroads of San Francisco, of California Street Cable Railway.
