Thayer's Notes:

a Lt. Peirce's middle name is from Heitman's Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army, which also confirms the spelling of his last name. His current tombstone in San Antonio spells his last name Pierce: his grave was moved, however, from its original site at Fort Griffin, and I don't know whether this is the original tombstone.
