As with other Confederate officers, Cullum's Register omits his war record. Of his service on the staff of Gen.
Joseph E. Johnston there is nothing out of the ordinary to recount; but of his rescue and preservation of William and Mary College his is a great story, worth telling many times; and told, in fact, in several places online, as in the AOG obituary notice linked to above, and
by the Virginia Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
