Thayer's Notes:

a As with other Confederate officers, Cullum's Register omits his war record. In the Nashville Cemetery site linked above, among other interesting information presumably taken from a contemporaneous obituary, Arthur Rutledge is referred to as "Major" and he is said to have served as Captain of the First Tennessee (Confederate) Artillery.

b In the Nashville Cemetery site linked above, he is said to have died at Sewanee, TN: a place with a similar name, but 150 miles distant. That this is probably the case, and that Cullum is mistaken, is made very likely by the details given by Mabel L. Webber in "Dr. John Rutledge and his Descendants" (The South Carolina Historical and Genealogical Magazine, Vol. 31 No. 2 p97), from which I supplied his birthdate above. Arthur Rutledge was the grandson of Edward Rutledge thru his father, and of Arthur Middleton thru his mother — both grandfathers being signers of the Declaration of Independence.
