Isaac I. Stevens: Exploratory surveyor of the northern route of the Transcontinental Railroad; first territorial governor of Washington; Union general killed in battle at Chantilly. Photograph.

Robert Q. Butler: Died within four years of graduating; for most of his short career he taught at the Military Academy.

Henry W. Halleck: Rose to General-in‑Chief of the Union armies during part of the War between the States.

Jeremy F. Gilmer: Engineer, served in the Mexican War, spent several years on fortifications in the Southeast; in the War between the States, Chief Engineer of the Confederate Army.

Henry L. Smith: Engineer, spent almost all his career working on river defenses and harbors in Louisiana.

Michael S. Culbertson: Resigned within two years; missionary to China and translator of the Bible into Chinese.

George Thom: Engineer, worked ten years in national boundary surveys, and twenty years on the improvement of harbors in New England; fought briefly in the Mexican War and for the Union in the War between the States.

Franklin D. Callender: Ordnance officer, served in the Second Seminole War, and fought in the Mexican War and for the Union in the War between the States; commanded various arsenals over a forty-year career.

Henry S. Burton: Artilleryman, fought in the Mexican War and for the Union in the War between the States.

Joseph A. Haskin: Turned over the arsenal at Baton Rouge to the State of Louisiana in 1861.

Henry D. Grafton: Artilleryman, fought in the Mexican War and served two tours of duty in Florida in the Second Seminole War; author of a manual on the camp and march.

James L. Rankin: Artilleryman, served in the Second Seminole and in southern garrisons; killed in a riding accident six years after graduating.

Henry B. Judd: Fought in the Second Seminole War and the Mexican War, but not in the War between the States because of poor health.

Lucius H. Allen: Resigned within seven years, his entire Army career having been in New York State, including three years teaching at the Academy; a merchant in California.

James B. Ricketts: Artilleryman, fought in the Mexican War and served in the Third Seminole War; a much wounded Union general in the War between the States.

Edward O. C. Ord: Served in the Second Seminole War and on the Pacific coast in the War with Mexico; fought Indians in Pacific Northwest, and for the Union in the War between the States, commanding various Army corps.

Joseph B. Boyd: Fought in the Second Seminole War, and resigned two and a half years after graduating; died four years later.

Henry J. Hunt: The Army's foremost 19c expert on Artillery; fought in the Mexican War and for the Union in the War between the States; co-author of the 1860 standard light artillery manual.

William Irvin: Resigned within two years, but served in the Mexican War with a regiment of Volunteers; in civilian life, a lawyer; died fairly young.

William S. Smith: A low-key career in various garrisons; died ten years after graduating.

Samuel K. Dawson: Artilleryman, fought in the Mexican War and served in Florida during the Third Seminole War; fought for the Union during the War between the States.

Augustus A. Gibson: Artilleryman, fought in the Mexican War and served in Florida during the Third Seminole War; fought for the Union during the War between the States.

Eleazer A. Paine: Resigned after a year, and made his career as a lawyer and state politician; in the War between the States, fought for the Union with the Volunteers.

Garrett Barry: Infantry­man, fought in the Mexican War; resigned after seven years and was a merchant and construction engineer.

Charles Wickliffe: Dismissed for insubordination, but re-appointed and fought in the Mexican War; Kentucky lawyer fought for the Confederacy in the War between the States, and was killed at Shiloh.

Thomas Hunton: Declined his appointment; practiced law for nearly half a century.

Edgar B. Gaither: Resigned after a year; lawyer and state politician, served as a volunteer in the Mexican War.

William H. Korn: Served in the Second Seminole War, but resigned within a year; died two years later.

Edward R. S. Canby: Fought in the Mexican War and for the Union in the War between the States; the rest of his thirty years in the Army was spent on the western frontier, often fighting Indians; killed by Indians at a parley.

John H. Hill: Dragoon; fought in the Second Seminole War and in the Mexican War, in which he died.
