Scene 21

Scenes of the spiral band running up the shaft

p125  XX. Reception of another embassy

The emperor, with three officers, receives this party standing. He holds his swordbelt in his left hand. They are five, and are all on foot. They are perhaps representatives of an independent tribe forced into rebellion by the Dacians. They wear long fringed cloaks buckled over the right shoulder and gathered in the left hand, and tight tunics. There would be no apparent connexion between these two receptions as the emperor is twice represented, but for the action of one of the horsemen described in the last composition.
