p131 XXVIII. Results of the action

The old men, women, and children fall into the hands of the Roman emperor. A man at the back of the composition p132has a child, clothed like the men, on his shoulder. His left hand holds the clasped hands of the child towards Trajan. A woman behind him stretches out her right hand to unite with them in this action. Another woman with a child at her breast turns to an old man who also carries a child at his shoulder holding on by the old man's hair. Another mother pushes her daughter before her, and two men in the foreground are supporting a little boy whose hands are held forward in supplication. Three men in the background seem to present this captive multitude to the emperor, to whom the officer on his right introduces them. The emperor is in the middle of an enclosure which is being fortified by a wall of masonry. Two soldiers make mortar in the foreground, one holding the basket in which it is contained. Others carry and lay hewn stones. Another is shaping a log of wood with a hammer and a chisel. The emperor speaks to the captives and holds out his right hand as an assurance of protection.
