The Romanesque Tympanum
of the Madonna della Sanità

[image ALT: A whitewashed plastered wall with a plain rectangular wooden door flanked at elbow height by an oeil-de‑boeuf window on either side. Over the door a more or less semicircular stone tympanum, not plastered; a primitive ceiling of wood and brick, also whitewashed; and in front of the whole, a low iron fence with a gap in front of the door rather than a proper gate. It is the entranceway of the church of the Madonna della Sanità near Città della Pieve, Umbria (central Italy).]

Oeil-de‑boeuf windows like these, 16c or later, can be seen in many rural chapels thruout Umbria. The Romanesque tympanum over the door is another matter: there aren't that many of them in the region, and this is one of the oldest.

[image ALT: A Romanesque stone tympanum, rather flatter than usual in its proportions, depicting the Virgin and Child seated on a throne, under an arched canopy between two angels. It is the tympanum over the main door of the Madonna della Sanità near Città della Pieve, Umbria (central Italy).]

The Virgin and Child enthroned between two angels.
(The TCI guidebook dates the chapel to the 13c, but I'm not so sure that this carving might not be somewhat earlier, late 12c.)
