The Romanesque Tympanum
of the Madonna della Sanità

[image ALT: zzz. It is the entrance door of the church of the Madonna della Sanità near Città della Pieve, Umbria (central Italy).]

Oeil-de‑boeuf windows like these, 16c or later, can be seen in many rural chapels thruout Umbria. The Romanesque tympanum over the door is another matter: there aren't that many of them in the region, and this is one of the oldest.

[image ALT: A Romanesque stone tympanum, rather flatter than usual in its proportions, depicting the Virgin and Child seated on a throne, under an arched canopy between two angels. It is the tympanum over the main door of the Madonna della Sanità near Città della Pieve, Umbria (central Italy).]

The Virgin and Child enthroned between two angels.
(The TCI guidebook dates the chapel to the 13c, but I'm not so sure that this carving might not be somewhat earlier, late 12c.)
