S. Lorenzo in Ponze

S. Lorenzo from the southwest.

I know nothing about the church — and this humble construction in a remote mountain hamlet is not likely to be fully documented — but if the round arch of the front door could easily be as recent as the early 1900s, I'd lay odds that it dates to the twelfth century, or at the latest to the first half of the thirteenth.

The keystone of the arch seems to bear a date, or maybe an abbreviated inscription.

There is no belfry; Ponze is so small there's no need for one. But behind the pine tree we discover that it was a full church:

The shed seems to have been built to house the bier we see here: sturdy enough to hold a coffin, carried by four strong men and maybe at some point hitched to a mule for a relative's last earthly ride. The headboard was once brightly painted, and that's gone — but the wood is still sound. The last time the bier saw service must surely have been in my own lifetime.
