Resurrection

The Resurrection occurred in Roman times: notice the rather awkward reminder of this in the curious acanthus motifs on the sarcophagus. No real Roman burial chest was ever decorated this way, of course.

Madonna and Child

The Madonna is signed; not by the artist, but by the man who commissioned the work:
· HOC · OP9 · F · F · CHRISTOPHANVS · GREGORII · 1525 ·
Hoc opus fecit fieri Christophanus Gregorii - Christophanus Gregorii had this work made
(who, were he alive today, would surely call himself Gregorio Cristofani.)

Note the patterned background in imitation of velvet brocade: a very characteristic mark of the local group of artists known as the 'School of Foligno'. This rough fresco by a local artisan, quite possibly an ex‑voto, was painted during the same period as the polished last works of Raphael.
