This simple depiction of the New Testament story is still not quite faithful to Scripture — the 12‑year‑old Jesus is shown, as almost always in the Middle Ages, as one-sidedly preaching or laying down the law — but the Jewish doctors and priests are portrayed without the hostility that one sees often enough in medieval art; even, with a measure of sympathy and respect. The divines are shown as serious, sober, studious men.
