A Colloquy in the Temple of Jerusalem

36 ". . . they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. 37And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and his answers. . . ."

Gospel according to Luke, ch. 2 (King James Version)

This simple depiction of the New Testament story is still not quite faithful to Scripture — the 12‑year‑old Jesus is shown, as almost always in the Middle Ages, as one-sidedly preaching or laying down the law — but the Jewish doctors and priests are portrayed without the hostility that one sees often enough in medieval art; even, with a measure of sympathy and respect. The divines are shown as serious, sober, studious men.
