Paciano (Perugia province)

A town of W central Umbria: 41°1.4N, 12°4.1E. Altitude: 392 m. Population in 2003: 950.

Paciano is a hill town 6 km or so south of Lake Trasimeno, about 3 km W of Panicale.

It is another one of those beautiful places in Umbria that the guidebooks overlook: attractive mediaeval streets, a circuit of walls, several interesting late mediaeval and Renaissance churches — S. Carlo, S. Giuseppe, and S. Maria Assunta — each containing good paintings: this is Italy after all. The best paintings have been collected into a separate museum, the Raccolta d' Arte di S. Giuseppe, right across from the church of that name.

A proper website will eventually appear here, since I've been to Paciano, if briefly. In the meanwhile, you might conceivably find it marginally useful to read the brief paragraph in the Aug. 4, 2000 entry of my diary, which includes a photo of a rather striking sculpture on the façade of S. Giuseppe; for further (and much better) information, see the websites linked in the navigation bar at the bottom of the page.

Frazioni

Paciano is one of the 8 or 9 comuni in Umbria that have no dependent towns with enough of an administrative identity to be a frazione; in the summer of 2000, however, there was noise in the newspapers about remedying that by swallowing up nearby Panicale, which is an independent comune. So far (Feb 08) it hasn't happened, and it probably won't.
