The Greeks associated each order with its own type of entablature: the Doric with its frieze of alternating triglyphs and metopes, and the Ionic and Corinthian with a frieze crowned by small blocks or dentils over a stepped architrave. The Romans were less conventional and often combined elements from different orders.
