The first roll of arms was drawn in the mid-thirteenth century by the historian Matthew Paris in his Chronica Majora. There too, in a scene illustrating the Battle of Stamford Bridge, he depicted the first appearance in armory of a mermaid, which is shown, as well, on the horse trapping.
