Return to Stonyhurst Gospel

Durham Cathedral

As well as the relics associated with Cuthbert, taken from his coffin in 1827 and now in the Durham Cathedral Treasury, perhaps most remarkable of all is the oak coffin, itself, the carved boards incised with figures of the apostles, the Virgin and Child, archangels, and Christ surrounded by the symbols of the four evangelists.

The body remains still under a plain marble slab on the spot where his shrine had stood until its destruction during the dissolution of the church.
