Return to Roman Ruins in Britain
Part of a series of so-called Saxon Shore forts that were built along the southeastern coast of Britain during the late third and fourth centuries to defend against increasing incursions by Saxon raiders, Portchester may have been added by the usurper Carausius, himself.
Its defensive wall survives as one of the best preserved Roman structures in Britain.
