In the construction of Attic red-figure pottery, it soon was discovered that a single figure looked more impressive if the black background were allowed to merge with that of the vase, itself. This figure of a youth singing and playing the lyre (kithara) is considered to be the most impressive depiction of music to have survived from ancient Greece.
