Pegasus Protome

A protome is a representation of the upper part of an animal used to decorate a piece of sculpture, in this case, the capitals of the pilasters in the cella of the Temple of Mars Ultor. This detail shows the extraordinary delicacy of the sculpted Lunense (Carrara) marble which, high atop the engaged column on the wall of the inner chamber, would seem to have been scarcely visible in the dim light.
