The 103 volumes of papal chamberlain Gaetano Moroni's ecclesiastical dictionary, appearing over the course of twenty-two years (1840‑1861), are a treasure trove of historical data felt to be important to the Catholic Church in the 19c: as his subtitle puts it, "especially with regards to the chief saints, blesseds, martyrs, fathers, to the popes, cardinals and the most famous ecclesiastical writers, to the various degrees of the hierarchy of the Catholic Church, to the patriarchal, archiepiscopal and episcopal cities, to the schisms, heresies, councils, the most solemn feasts, the rites, sacred ceremonies, papal cardinalitial and prelatial chapels, to religious, military, knightly, and hospitaller orders as well as to the Roman Court and Curia and the papal family, etc."
That said, it's quirky in the extreme, as might be expected from a work of this size written by one man by himself, in the age of quill pens still, while holding down a day job. 1½ volumes on Venice, 8 pages on the little French town of Viviers and 15 pages on Sassoferrato, entries for Lycaonia and the 10th‑century abbot Poppo of Flanders — but not a word about the Liber Pontificalis, at least neither under the letter L nor mentioned in the index.
I will be putting a very few of these articles onsite, mostly for convenience and English translation, but also with the occasional annotation. These are indicated and linked below in italics.
Fortunately, Moroni has provided us with a subject index. It's in six volumes of fine print, of course:
