Like all my many pets to date, WhiteSox was a rescue: as a three-month‑old puppy, he was being used as bait in a dog-fighting ring. I think he eventually forgot all about it, although it took him two years.
He actually did have two small white socks, on the back of his front paws, otherwise quite invisible.
