is an excellent in-depth survey of its topic. Mostly Roman, although a general background proved necessary, and sometimes the author's interests lead him wonderfully astray. The discussion of sources includes a long section (pp19‑29) on Pliny the Elder and the six Books of his Natural History that deal with trees.
