Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1837, to July 1, 1841, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Bvt. Second Lieut., 1st Dragoons, July 1, 1841. Second Lieut., 1st Dragoons, Dec. 31, 1841. Served: at the Cavalry School for Practice, Carlisle, Pa., 1841‑42; on frontier duty at Ft. Atkinson, Io., 1842, — Sac and Fox Agency, Io., 1842, — Ft. Atkinson, Io., 1842‑43, — Scouting against Winnebago Indians, 1843, — Ft. Atkinson, Io., 1843‑45, — Expedition to Lac-qui‑parle, 1845, (First Lieut., 1st Dragoons, June 30, 1846) — and Ft. Atkinson, Io., 1845;a on Recruiting service, 1845‑46; and in the War with Mexico, 1846‑47. Died, Oct. 18, 1847, at Vera Cruz, Mex.: Aged 28. |
a At Fort Atkinson, he was charged with removing illegal white squatters from Indian lands: see Iowa Journal of History and Politics, XIV.510, in which he is mentioned.
