Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1837, to July 1, 1841, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Bvt. Second Lieut., 5th Infantry, July 1, 1841. Served: on frontier duty at Ft. Mackinac, Mich., 1841‑43, — Detroit, Mich., 1843‑45, — and Ft. Wood, La., 1845; in Military Occupation of (Second Lieut., 7th Infantry, Apr. 18, 1845) Texas, 1845; at the Military Academy, as Asst. Instructor of Infantry Tactics, Dec. 16, 1845, to Nov. 18, 1852; on frontier duty at Ft. Gibson, (First Lieut., 7th Infantry, Aug. 20, 1847) p102 I. T., 1853, — escorting Lieutenant Whipple's Topographical party, 1853‑54; as Member of Board, 1854‑55, to Revise "Rifle and Infantry Tactics," adopted Mar. 29, 1855, for the Army and Military of the United States; on frontier duty, conducting Recruits to Ft. Washita, I. T., 1855, (Captain, 7th Infantry, Mar. 3, 1855) — Ft. Belknap, Tex., 1855‑58; in garrison at Jefferson Barracks, Mo., 1858; on frontier duty on Utah Expedition, 1858‑60, — March to New Mexico, 1860, — Ft. Defiance, N. M., 1860, — and Ft. McLane, N. M., 1861; and on leave of absence, 1861. Resigned, May 27, 1855. Joined in the Rebellion of 1861‑66 against the United States,a and was Killed, May 10, 1864, near Spottsylvania C. H., Va.: Aged 43. |
a As with other Confederate officers, Cullum's Register omits his war record: according to the Southern Historical Society Papers he was promoted to Brigadier-General on May 15, 1863, and commanded a brigade of Johnson's Division, Ewell's Corps, Army of Northern Virginia.
