Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1837, to July 1, 1841, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Bvt. Second Lieut., 2d Infantry, July 1, 1841. Served: in the Florida War, 1841‑42; in garrison at Buffalo Barracks, (Second Lieut., 2d Infantry, Aug. 22, 1847) N. Y., 1842, 1843‑44, — Ft. Ontario, N. Y., 1844‑45, — and Buffalo Barracks, N. Y., 1845; on Coast Survey, Oct. 7, 1845, to May 19, 1846; of Inspection duty, 1846; in garrison at Ft. McHenry, Md., 1846‑47; in (First Lieut., 3d Infantry, Aug. 22, 1847) the War with Mexico, 1847, sick at Tampico; on Recruiting service, 1847‑48; in garrison at Jefferson Barracks, Mo., 1848, — and Ft. Hamilton, N. Y., 1848; on voyage to California, 1848‑49; on frontier duty at Monterey, Cal., 1849, — San Diego, Cal., 1849‑50, — Ft. Yuma, Cal., 1850‑51, — San Diego, Cal., 1851‑52, — and Vallecitos, Cal. (Commissary (Captain, 2d Infantry, Jan. 8, 1853) duty), 1852; and on Recruiting service, 1852‑54. Resigned, Feb. 5, 1855. Civil History. — Farmer, Fauquier County, Va., 1855‑61. Joined in the Rebellion of 1861‑66 against the United States.a Civil History. — Unknown, nothing authentic having been received. Died, July 3, 1874, at West River, Md.: Aged 54. Buried, Christ Episcopal Church Cemetery, West River, MD. |
a As with other Confederate officers, Cullum's Register omits his war record: according to the Southern Historical Society Papers he was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Forty-ninth Virginia Infantry, Early's Division, Jackson's Corps, Army of Northern Virginia.
