Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1843, to July 1, 1847, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Second Lieut., 4th Artillery, July 1, 1847. Served: at the Military Academy, as Asst. Professor of Geography, History, and Ethics, Aug. 30, 1847, to Sep. 8, 1849; as Asst. Ordnance (Transferred to Ordnance, Apr. 24, 1849) Officer at Watervliet Arsenal, N. Y., 1850‑53; in charge of the Armament (First Lieut., Ordnance, July 1, 1853) of the fortifications on the Rio Grande, Tex., 1853‑54; as Asst. Ordnance Officer at Washington Arsenal, D. C., 1854‑55; at the Military (Captain, 10th Infantry, Mar. 3, 1855: Declined) Academy, as Principal Asst. Professor of Geography, History, and Ethics, Sep. 28, 1855, to Aug. 16, 1856; as Asst. Ordnance Officer at Watertown Arsenal, Mas., 1856‑58, 1858‑59; in command of Leavenworth Ordnance Depot, Kan., 1859‑60; on leave of absence in Europe, (Captain, Ordnance, July 1, 1861, for Fourteen Years' Continuous Service) 1860‑61; and unemployed since Nov. 1, 1861.
Retired from Active Service, Nov. 1, 1861,
