Born Oct. 29, 1823. Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1843, to July 1, 1847, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Second Lieut., 2d Artillery, July 1, 1847. Served: in the War with Mexico, 1847‑48; as Asst. Ordnance Officer, (Transferred to Ordnance, Apr. 13, 1848) at Watervliet Arsenal, N. Y., 1848‑52, — at St. Louis Arsenal, Mo., (First Lieut., Ordnance, Mar. 3, 1853) 1852‑53, — and at Ft. Monroe Arsenal, Va., 1853‑57; on Foundry duty at Richmond, Va., 1857‑58; as Asst. Ordnance Officer at Benicia Arsenal, Cal., 1858‑60, and in command, 1861‑64. Served during the Rebellion of the Seceding States, 1861‑66: as Chief (Captain, Ordnance, July 1, 1861, for Fourteen Years; Continuous Service) of Ordnance of the Department of the Pacific, Oct. 12, 1861, to June, p308 1864; and as Inspector of Equipments and Accoutrements, July 18 to Sep. 24, 1864, — and of Ordnance and Projectiles, Sep. 24, 1864, to
(Bvt. Major, and Bvt. Lieut.‑Col., Mar. 13, 1865,
