Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1845, to July 1, 1849, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Bvt. Second Lieut., Mounted Rifles, July 1, 1849. Served: at the Cavalry School for Practice, Carlisle, Pa., 1849‑50; and on frontier duty at Ft. Laramie, Dak., 1850. Resigned, Nov. 30, 1850. Civil History. — Counselor at Law, Martinsville, Ind., 1851‑56. District Attorney, for Brown, Monroe, and Morgan Counties, Ind., 1852‑54. Colonel, Indiana Militia, 1854‑58. Secretary of State of the State of Indiana, 1856‑58. Military History. — Served in paying troops in the Department of Texas, 1858‑61. Major, Staff — Paymaster, Oct. 23, 1858. Served during the Rebellion of the Seceding States, 1861‑66: as Chief Paymaster for the States of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin, June, 1862, to Sep. 19, 1864; on leave of absence, Oct. 22, 1864, to Feb. 14, 1865; and as Chief Paymaster, at New Orleans, La., Feb. 14 to May 17, 1865.
Bvt. Lieut.‑Col., Mar. 13, 1865,
Bvt. Colonel, Mar. 13, 1865, for Faithful and Meritorious Services in the Pay Department. Served: as Chief Paymaster for the District of Indiana and Illinois, May 17, 1865, to June, 1867, — and of the District of New Orleans, La., (Colonel, Staff — Asst. Paymaster-General, July 28, 1866) June 24, 1867, to Apr. 15, 1869, — and of the Division of the South, Apr. 15, 1869, to Feb. 27, 1877; at Louisville, Ky., Mar. 10, 1877, to Mar. 13, 1878; and under the orders of the Commanding General of the Division of the Missouri, at St. Louis, Mo., Apr. 1, 1878, to July 11, 1879; as Chief Paymaster of the Department of Missouri, to July 31, 1880; on duty in the Paymaster-General's Office, at Washington, D. C., to Mar. 3, 1882; awaiting orders at Louisville, Ky., to July 1, 1882; as Chief Paymaster of the Division of the Atlantic and Department of the East, Aug. 1, 1882, to Apr. 13, 1888; and awaiting orders to Dec. 30, 1888. Retired from Active Service, Dec. 30, 1888, he being 64 Years of Age. Vol. IV Military History. — Retired officer.
