Seth Maxwell Barton: Born Sep. 8, 1829, Fredericksburg, VA. Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1845, to July 1, 1849, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Bvt. Second Lieut., 3d Infantry, July 1, 1849. Served: in garrison at Ft. Columbus, N. Y., 1849‑50; on frontier duty (Second Lieut., 1st Infantry, Apr. 19, 1850) at Las Vegas, N. M., 1850, — Ft. Duncan, Tex., 1851, — Ft. Inge, Tex., 1851, — Ft. Lincoln, Tex., 1851, — detached service, 1851‑53, — Ft. Terrett, (First Lieut., 1st Infantry, June 1, 1853) Tex., 1853, — Ft. Clark, Tex., 1853, — convoying train to Ft. Bliss, Tex., 1853‑54, — Ft. Clark, Tex., 1854‑55, — Ft. Duncan, Tex., 1855, — Ft. McKavett, Tex., 1855‑57, — as Adjutant, 1st Infantry, May 1, 1855, to Oct. 31, 1857, — Ft. Duncan, Tex., 1857, — Ft. Lancaster, Tex., 1857, — Scouting against Comanche Indians, 1857, being engaged in a Skirmish on the North Fork of Concho River, Tex., Feb. 13, 1857, — and Ft. McKavett, Tex., 1857‑58; on leave of absence, 1858‑60; and on frontier (Captain, 1st Infantry, Oct. 31, 1857) duty at Ft. Cobb, I. T., 1860‑61, — and march to Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., 1861. Resigned, June 11, 1861. Joined in the Rebellion of 1861‑66 against the United States.a Civil History. — Unknown, nothing authentic having been received. Vol. IV Civil History. — Unknown. Died April 11, 1900, at Washington, D. C.: Aged 71. Buried, Fredericksburg Cemetery, Fredericksburg, VA. |
