Born Jan. 30, 1829, Augusta, GA. Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1845, to July 1, 1849, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Bvt. Second Lieut., 8th Infantry, July 1, 1849. Served: on frontier duty, in convoying train to Pecos River, Tex., 1849, — and Ft. Lincoln, Tex., 1850; in garrison at Jefferson Barracks, (Second Lieut., 7th Infantry, July 16, 1850) Mo., 1851; on frontier duty at Corpus Christi, Tex., 1851, — Copano Subsistence Depot, Tex., 1851, — and Brownsville, Tex., 1851; as Aide-de‑Camp to Bvt. Maj.‑General Twiggs, Oct. 15, 1851, to Nov. 30, 1853, at New Orleans, La.; on frontier duty at Ft. Belknap, Tex., 1853, — March up the Rio Grande, Tex., 1853‑55, — escorting Mexican Boundary (First Lieut., 10th Infantry, Mar. 3, 1855) Commission, 1855‑56, — Ft. Crawford, Wis., 1856, — Ft. Ridgely, (Captain, 10th Infantry, July 20, 1856) Min., 1856, — and on Utah Expedition, 1857‑60; and on leave of absence, 1860‑61. Resigned, Jan. 19, 1861. Joined in the Rebellion of 1861‑66 against the United States.a Civil History. — Farmer, near Rome, Ga., 18–––, to 18–––. Member of the American Military Commission to Corea, 1888.
