Armistead Lindsay Long: Born Sep. 3, 1825, near Lynchburg, VA. Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1846, to July 1, 1850, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Bvt. Second Lieut. of Artillery, July 1, 1850. Served: in garrison at Ft. Moultrie, S. C., 1850‑51; on frontier duty (Second Lieut., 2d Artillery, June 30, 1851) at Ft. Defiance, N. M., 1852‑53, — and Albuquerque, N. M., 1853‑54; (First Lieut., 2d Artillery, July 1, 1854) in garrison at Ft. McHenry, Md., 1854, — and Barrancas Barracks, Fla., 1854‑55; on frontier duty at Ft. Washita, I. T., 1855‑56; in garrison at Ft. Monroe, Va., 1856‑57; on frontier duty at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., 1857, — quelling Kansas Disturbances, 1857‑58, — Ft. Kearny, Neb., 1858, — and Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., 1858, 1859‑60; and in garrison at Augusta Arsenal, Ga., 1860‑61. Served during the Rebellion of the Seceding States, 1861: in the Defenses of Washington, D. C., Feb. 7 to June 10, 1861, being Aide-de‑Camp to Brig.‑General Sumner, May 20 to June 10, 1861. Resigned, June 10, 1861. Joined in the Rebellion of 1861‑66 against the United States.a Civil History. — Civil Engineer, 1866‑68. Farmer, Bedford Co., Va., 1868‑73. Author of "Memoirs of General R. E. Lee," 1889.
