Second Lieut. of Infantry, July 1, 1850. Served: on frontier duty at Ft. Washita, I. T., 1850‑51, — Ft. Gates, Tex., 1851‑52, — Scouting, 1852, — Camp Johnston, Tex., 1852, — Ft. (Second Lieut., 8th Infantry, May 25, 1852) Chadbourne, Tex., 1852‑53, — Ft. McKavett, Tex., 1853, — Ringgold Barracks, Tex., 1853‑54, — San Antonio, Tex., 1854, — Ft. Davis, Tex., 1854, — Scouting, 1854, — Ft. Davis, Tex., 1854, — Scouting, 1854‑55, — (First Lieut., 8th Infantry, Sep. 4, 1855) Ft. Davis, Tex., 1855, — Ft. Bliss, Tex., 1856, — Scouting, 1856‑57, — and Ft. Davis, Tex., 1857; on Recruiting service, 1858‑59; and on Coast Survey, May 19, 1859, to Jan. 28, 1861. Resigned, Jan. 28, 1861. a Col. Cole's full name (such was his rank in the Confederate army, see next note) is from Heitman's Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army; his birthdate is from his tombstone (q.v.).
b As with other Confederate officers, Cullum's Register omits his war record: according to the Southern Historical Society Papers, in 1862 he was ranked Lieut.‑Colonel and served as Chief Commissary of Subsistence of the Army of Northern Virginia.
