Born Jan. 17, 1833. Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1848, to July 1, 1852, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Bvt. Second Lieut., 3d Artillery, July 1, 1852. Served: on frontier duty at San Francisco, Cal., 1852‑53, — Pacific (Second Lieut., 3d Artillery, Sep. 6, 1853) Railroad Exploration, 1853‑54, — March through Utah to California, (First Lieut., 3d Artillery, Mar. 3, 1855) 1854‑55, — Benicia, Cal., 1855, — and Ft. Yuma, Cal., 1855‑57. Resigned, July 31, 1858. Civil History. — Elected Delegate to the U. S. House of Representatives from the proposed Territory of Arizona, 1857 and 1858. U. S. Commissioner to run and mark the Boundary Line between the State of California and the Territories of the United States, 1860‑61. Author of "The Geography and Resources of Arizona and Sonora," 1865. Died Oct. 17, 1871, at London, England: Aged 40.º Buried, North Burial Ground, Providence, RI. |
