Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1849, to July 1, 1853, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Bvt. Second Lieut. of Artillery, July 1, 1853. Served: in Florida Hostilities against the Seminole Indians, 1853‑54; (Second Lieut., 3d Artillery, Dec. 24, 1853) on frontier duty at Ft. Snelling, Min., 1854‑55, — Ft. Steilacoom, Wash., 1856, — Expedition against Puget Sound Indians, Wash., 1856, — San Francisco, Cal., 1856‑57, — Ft. Yuma, Cal., 1857, — Reconnoissance on (First Lieut., 3d Artillery, Nov. 11, 1856) Colorado River, 1857‑58, — Ft. Yuma, Cal., 1858, — and San Bernardino, Cal., 1858; on Spokane Expedition, Wash., 1858, being engaged in the Combat of the Four Lakes, Sep. 1, 1858, — Combat on Spokane Plains, Sep. 5, 1858, — and Skirmish on Spokane River, Sep. 8, 1858; on frontier duty at Ft. Vancouver, Wash., 1858‑59, — and commanding p545 escort to Superintendent of Wagon Road to Ft. Benton, Dak., 1859‑60; and on leave of absence, 1860‑61. Resigned, Mar. 3, 1861. a As with other Confederate officers, Cullum's Register omits his war record: according to the Southern Historical Society Papers he served in the 19th South Carolina Infantry, reaching the rank of Major.
