John Randolph Chambliss: Born Jan. 23, 1833. Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1849, to July 1, 1853, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Bvt. Second Lieut., Mounted Riflemen, July 1, 1853. Served: at the Cavalry School for Practice, Carlisle, Pa., 1853‑54. Resigned, Mar. 4, 1854. Civil History. — Planter, Hicksford, Va., 1854‑61. Major Staff (Aide-de‑Camp to the Governor of Virginia), 1856‑61, — Colonel, Virginia Militia, 1858‑61, — and Major, Staff (Brigade Inspector), 1859‑61. Joined in the Rebellion of 1861‑66 against the United States.a Killed, Aug. 16, 1864, at Deep Bottom, Va.: Aged 31. Buried, Chambliss Family Cemetery, Emporia, VA. |
