Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, Sep. 1, 1849, to July 1, 1853, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Bvt. Second Lieut. of Infantry, July 1, 1853. Served: in garrison at Ft. Columbus, N. Y., 1853‑54; on frontier (Second Lieut., 5th Infantry, Dec. 31, 1854) duty at Ft. Steilacoom, Wash., 1854‑55, — conducting recruits to Texas, (Second Lieut., 9th Infantry, Mar. 3, 1855: Declined) 1856, — and Ft. McIntosh, Tex., 1856; in Florida Hostilities against the Seminole Indians, 1856‑57, being engaged in a Skirmish near Bowleg's Town, Mar. 13, 1857; in garrison at Jefferson Barracks, Mo., 1857; on (First Lieut., 5th Infantry, Apr. 1, 1857) p561 frontier duty on Utah Expedition, 1857‑60; and on recruiting service, 1860‑61. Captain, 16th Infantry, May 14, 1861. Served during the Rebellion of the Seceding States, 1861: as Mustering Officer at Chicago, Ill., July to Sep., 1861; on leave of absence, (Colonel, 42d Illinois Volunteers, July 22, 1861) Sep. 8 to Nov. 25, 1861; and in command of Regiment in Military Operations in Missouri, Nov. 25 to Dec. 24, 1861. Died, Dec. 24, 1861, at Smithton, Mo.: Aged 31. |
