Born July 6, 1830, Castleton, VT. Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1851, to July 1, 1855, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Bvt. Second Lieut. of Cavalry, July 1, 1855. Served: in garrison at Jefferson Barracks, Mo., 1855; on frontier duty p622 at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., 1855‑56, — quelling Kansas Disturbances, (Second Lieut., 1st Cavalry, Oct. 1, 1855) 1856‑57, — Adjutant, 1st Cavalry, Feb. 17 to Apr., 1857, — Cheyenne Expedition, 1857, being engaged in the Combat on Solomon's Fork of Kansas River, July 29, 1857, — Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., 1857, — Ft. Riley, Kan., 1857‑58, — and Utah Expedition, 1858; and as Adjutant, 1st Cavalry, June 11, 1858, to July 1, 1861; at St. Louis, Mo., 1858‑60, — Ft. (First Lieut., 1st Cavalry, Jan. 31 to May 24, 1861) Leavenworth, Kan., 1860, — and Ft. Riley, Kan., 1860‑61. Served during the Rebellion of the Seceding States, 1861‑63: as Asst. (Bvt. Captain, Staff — Asst. Adjutant-General, July 1, 1861) Adjutant-General (Army of the Potomac), July 31, 1861, to Nov. 7, 1862, (Captain, Staff — Asst. Adjutant-General, July 1, 1861) (Lieut.‑Colonel, Staff — Additional Aide-de‑Camp, Sep. 28, 1861)
on the Staff of Major-General (Major, Staff — Asst. Adjutant-General, July 17, 1862) Nov., 1862; awaiting orders, Nov. 10 to Dec. 1, 1862; and as Adjutant-General of the Department of the Missouri, Dec. 1, 1862, to June 17, 1863. Died, June 17, 1863, at St. Louis, Mo.: Aged 32. Buried, Cedar Grove Cemetery, Fair Haven, VT. |
