Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1852, to July 1, 1856, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to

Second Lieut., 3d Artillery, July 1, 1856.

Served: on frontier duty in conducting Recruits to California, 1857, — San Diego, Cal., 1857, — Ft. Tejon, Cal., 1857‑58, — San Bernardino,

(First Lieut., 3d Artillery, Dec. 3, 1858)

Cal., 1858, — Ft. Yuma, Cal., 1858‑59, — Ft. Gaston, Cal., 1859, — Ft. Vancouver, Wash., 1859, — San Juan Island, Wash., 1859, — and Ft. Vancouver, Wash., 1859‑61; and in garrison at the Presidio of San Francisco, Cal., 1861.

Served during the Rebellion of the Seceding States, 1861‑62: in organizing

(Captain, 5th Artillery, May 14, 1861)

his Company at Harrisburg, Pa., Aug. 31 to Sep. 23, 1861; on Recruiting service, Sep. 23, 1861, to Mar. 8, 1862; on March to Falmouth, Va., via Catlett's Station, Apr. to June, 1862; and in the Virginia Peninsular Campaign (Army of the Potomac), June, 1862, being engaged in the Battle of Mechanicsville, June 26, 1862, — and Battle of Gaines's Mill, June 27, 1862, where he was Mortally Wounded.
