Guilford Dudley Bailey: Born Sep. 24, 1834. Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1852, to July 1, 1856, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Second Lieut., 2d Artillery, July 1, 1856. Served: in garrison at Ft. Ontario, N. Y., 1856‑57; on frontier duty at Ft. Mackinac, Mich., 1857, — Ft. Snelling, Min., 1857, — and Ft. Leavenworth, quelling Kansas Disturbances, 1857‑58, 1858‑59; at the Military Academy as Asst. Professor of Geography, History, and Ethics, Aug. 29 to Oct. 4, 1859; on frontier duty at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., 1859‑60; on leave of absence, 1860; and on frontier duty at Ft. Brown, Tex., 1860‑61. Served during the Rebellion of the Seceding States, 1861‑62: in Defense (First Lieut., 2d Artillery, May 14, 1861) of Ft. Pickens, Fla., Apr. 17 to June 27, 1861; absent sick, July 30 (Captain, Staff — Com. of Subsistence, Aug. 3, 1861) (Colonel, 1st New York Light Artillery Volunteers, Sep. 25, 1861)
to Oct., 1861; in the Defenses of Washington, D. C., Oct., 1861, to Apr., 1862; and as Chief of Artillery of General Killed, May 31, 1862, at the Battle of Fair Oaks: Aged 29. Buried, Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, Poughkeepsie, NY. |
