Hylan Benton Lyon: Born Feb. 22, 1835, Caldwell County, KY. Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1852, to July 1, 1856, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Bvt. Second Lieut. of Artillery, July 1, 1856. Served: in Florida Hostilities against the Seminole Indians, 1856‑57; (Second Lieut., 3d Artillery, Oct. 1, 1856) on frontier duty at Ft. Yuma, Cal., 1857‑58, — San Francisco, Cal., 1858, — Ft. Yuma, Cal., 1858, — San Bernardino, Cal., 1858, — Spokane Expedition, 1858, being engaged in the Combat on Spokane Plains, Sep. 5, 1858, and Skirmish on Spokane River, Sep. 8, 1858, — Ft. Vancouver, Wash., 1858‑59, — and Escorting Superintendent of Wagon Road from (First Lieut., 3d Artillery, Sep. 27, 1860) Walla Walla, Wash., to Ft. Benton, Mon., 1859‑60; and on leave of absence, 1860‑61. Resigned, Apr. 30, 1861. Joined in the Rebellion of 1861‑66 against the United States.a Civil History. — Warden of Kentucky Penitentiary, 1868‑75. Commissioner of the State of Kentucky of Penitentiary constructions at Eddyville, Ky., since 18–––. Vol. IV Civil History. — Unknown. Vol. V Civil History. — Farmer, Eddyville, Ky.
