William Hicks Jackson: Born Oct. 1, 1835, Paris, TN. Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1852, to July 1, 1856, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Bvt. Second Lieut., Mounted Riflemen, July 1, 1856. Served: at the Cavalry School for Practice, Carlisle, Pa., 1856‑57; on (Second Lieut., Mounted Riflemen, Dec. 30, 1856) p667 frontier duty at Ft. Bliss, Tex., 1857, — conducting Recruits to Ft. Buchanan, N. M., 1857‑58, being engaged against Kiowa Indians in a Skirmish near Ft. Craig, N. M., Dec. 7, 1857, — Ft. Bliss, Tex., 1858‑59, — Scouting in Navajo Country, N. M., 1859, — Ft. Stanton, N. M., 1859‑60, — Comanche and Kiowa Expedition, 1860, — Ft. Union, N. M., 1860‑61, — Scouting, 1861, — and Ft. Stanton, N. M., 1861; and on leave of absence, 1861. Resigned, May 16, 1861. Joined in the Rebellion of 1861‑66 against the United States.a Civil History. — Planter and Stock Breeder, near Nashville, Ten., since 18–––. Vol. IV Civil History. — Breeder of thoroughbred horses, proprietor of Belle Meade farm, near Nashville, Ten.
