Thomas James Berry: Born Oct. 28, 1835.

Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1853, to July 1, 1857, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to

Bvt. Second Lieut. of Dragoons, July 1, 1857.

Served: on frontier duty on Utah Expedition, 1858‑59, — and at Ft.

(Second Lieut., 2d Dragoons, June 4, 1858)

Kearny, Neb., 1859‑60; and on leave of absence, 1860‑61.

Resigned, Jan. 28, 1861.

Joined in the Rebellion of 1861‑66 against the United States.​a

Died, Oct. 16, 1865, at Newnan, Ga.: Aged 30.

Buried, Oak Hill Cemetery, Newnan, GA.


Thayer's Note:

a As with other Confederate officers, Cullum's Register omits his war record: according to the Southern Historical Society Papers he commanded the 60th Georgia Infantry, John B. Gordon's Brigade, Early's Division, 2d Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, with the rank of Lieut.‑Colonel.
