Edwin Henry Stoughton: Born Jun. 23, 1838. Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1854, to July 1, 1859, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Bvt. Second Lieut. of Infantry, July 1, 1859. Served: in garrison at Ft. Columbus, N. Y., 1859‑60; and on leave (Second Lieut., 6th Infantry, Sep. 5, 1859) of absence, 1860‑61. Resigned, Mar. 4, 1861. Served during the Rebellion of the Seceding States, 1861‑63: in Scouting in Western Territories, 1861; in the Defenses of Washington, D. C., Sep., 1861, to Mar., 1862; in the Virginia Peninsular Campaign (Army (Colonel, 4th Vermont Volunteers, Sep. 21, 1861) of the Potomac), Mar. to June, 1862, being engaged in the Siege of Yorktown, Apr. 5 to May 4, 1862, participating in the Action at Lee's Mills, Apr. 16, 1862, — Battle of Williamsburg, May 5, 1862, — Battle of Savage Station, June 29, 1862, — and Operations before Richmond, June, 1862; on leave of absence, July to Nov., 1862; and in command (Brig.‑General, U. S. Volunteers, Nov. 5, 1862) of Brigade covering the Defenses of Washington, D. C., Nov., 1862, to Mar., 1863, being captured by Mosby's Guerrillas at Fairfax C. H., Mar. 8, 1863. Commission Expired by Constitutional Limitation, Mar. 4, 1863.a Civil History. — Counselor at Law, New York city, 1863‑68. Died, Dec. 25, 1868, at Boston, Mas.: Aged 31. Buried, Immanuel Cemetery, Bellows Falls, VT. |
