Served: on frontier duty at Albuquerque, N. M., 1860, — and Taos, N. M., 1860‑61; and on leave of absence, 1861. Resigned, Mar. 2, 1861. Joined in the Rebellion of 1861‑66 against the United States.a Civil History. — Civil Engineer, 1867‑68. Professor of Mathematics, Agricultural College, Mis., 1876‑79. Professor of Mathematics and Civil Engineering, S. C. University, 1880‑87, — and of Physics and Civil Engineering since 1888. Vol. IV Civil History. — Unknown. Vol. V Civil History. — Continued in service as Professor of Physics at South Carolina College to 1901. — Acting President of the University of South Carolina to 1902; President of the University of South Carolina since 1902. — L. L. D., University of South Carolina. — Residence, Columbia, S. C. Vol. VI (Born May 16, 1836.) Military History. — Brevet Second Lieut. of Dragoons, July 1, 1860. Resigned Mar. 2, 1861. Civil History. — President of the University of South Carolina, 1902 to June, 1908, when he withdrew from the University and has since lived in retirement near Asheville, N. C.; Degree of LL.D. conferred by the University of South Carolina. Vol. VII Military History: — Brevet Second Lieutenant of Dragoons, July 1, 1860. Resigned, Mar. 2, 1861. As with other Confederate officers, Cullum's Register omits his war record: according to the Southern Historical Society Papers he was Assistant Adjutant-General in Huger's Division of the Army of Northern Virginia, with the rank of Major in 1862.
